This is the last proprietary tool in our workflow, which I don't love (especially when something stops working and you have to hand-patch their library), but it's the best tool for the job. There are more lightweight open source libraries if you just want to play sounds, but I work with audio teams that want finite control over dynamic audio, and a tool like FMOD is a requirement.
